The extension had been carefully designed by Crawford and Gray Architects to meet the stringent planning requirements of the Kensington Conservation Area. A green roof had been specified to enhance the view to and from of the rear of the upper ground floor. Opaque and clear glass were used to provide a more private route up to the upper ground floor terrace but offer full views of the garden from the lower ground floor level. Works included the Georgian timber structure, plaster mouldings, original brickwork, railings and woodwork. New services were added including a medical lift, air conditioning and flexible systems for electricity and communication to all the consulting rooms. The project was developed in close discussion with The Crown Estate, owner of the freehold of the building who provided a strict schedule of repairs. The decoration was designed with the client's intended use of the house in mind. As part of the project, an extensive green roof was installed onto the existing halls roof and green walls onto the two end walls of the new building. The design developed around a clear zoning of the project areas from places of higher activity and social interaction (bar, retail, Yoga and Pilates Studios) to areas of tranquillity (relaxation and treatment rooms) with emphasis on natural light, flow and circulation. New full height fenestrations were open to the front and rear of the existing barn to connect the interiors to the landscape and the rest of the site. Within the main areas there are clear references to the four elements: fire (lounge area fireplace); water (vitality pool; feature showers); earth (marble works and seamless flooring); air (Great Hall double height spaces and natural ventilation). The design developed around a clear zoning of the project areas from places of higher activity and social interaction (bar, retail, Yoga and Pilates Studios) to areas of tranquillity (relaxation and treatment rooms) with emphasis on natural light, flow and circulation. New full height fenestrations were open to the front and rear of the existing barn to connect the interiors to the landscape and the rest of the site. Within the main areas there are clear references to the four elements: fire (lounge area fireplace); water (vitality pool; feature showers); earth (marble works and seamless flooring); air (Great Hall double height spaces and natural ventilation). The project team designed a set of bespoke joinery piece to make the best of small foot print and take advantage of the very tall ceilings.
